Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the Food Safety Manager Exam & Certification in the North Bay

What should I bring to class?
A government-issued photo ID is required (typically your CA driver’s license) to take the exam.
For class, you may also wish to bring a lunch or something to eat – there isn’t much nearby and we only break for a 30-minute lunch.
You can take notes during class, but when the exam starts, you will not have access to any other materials.
What do I have to do before taking the exam? Am I qualified?
ServSafe courses and exams have no prerequisite. However, we see at least 1 in 5 fail in a normal class, and higher if the training is not taken. We highly suggest that you study at least 2 weeks in advance and take the 2-day class if you’re a new Food Safety Management, and the 1 or 2-day if you are recertifying, depending on your confidence level.
My current food certification is expiring or has expired. When do I need to get recertified?
You must retake the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Examination before your current ServSafe Certification expires. If your current Certification has lapsed, get recertified at once!
If I failed the exam, how soon can I take it again?
If you failed it once, you can take it any time again within a thirty day period (no waiting period). However, you’ll want to make sure you are ready, because if a third attempt is required, you must wait at least sixty days from your last attempt. During one year, you may take the same ServSafe test up to four times.
Can you come to my location for training?
Yes. A ServSafe instructor can come to your location in Sonoma, Marin or Napa for on-site training as follows:
1 or 2 day training available ($99 or $139 per student for 1 or 2  days, respectively).

Minimum for travel is $594 for 1-day or $894 for 2-day (equivalent to 6 students, though it can be for any number).
Additional charges may apply for travel beyond 15 miles from Novato, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, or Napa.

  • Prepayment required.
  • Dates depend on availability.
  • Must be arranged at least 3 weeks in advance.

What are the California Regulations for a Food Safety Certification?
Food facilities that prepare, handle, or serve non-prepackaged potentially hazardous food, must have an owner or employee who has successfully passed an approved and accredited ANSI-CFP food safety certification examination (Food Safety Manager certification).

In addition, pursuant to Senate Bill 303, all food handlers are required to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of their date of hire from an ANSI-accredited training provider (Food Handler certification).

Some food facilities are exempt, including some mobile food facilities, temporary food booths, farmer’s markets, produce stands and markets that handles only packaged foods. These are not required to have a certified food safety manager on staff. However you should always contact your county’s local health department (for County of Marin see the Food Program website).

How long is the Food Safety Manager certificate valid for?
5 years from the date of testing/passing.
What is the training requirement to obtain the Food Manager Certification?
There is none; passing a nationally approved food safety accredited examination is sufficient. However, the failure rate is high! If you are taking this exam for the first time, we recommend that students start studying at least 2 weeks in advance.

If you have taken the exam before and are re-certifying, we recommend that you take a food safety training course to prepare for the certification exam.

What is the Cancellation Policy?
One re-schedule is permitted, without fees or penalties, if requested a minimum of 5 days prior to class. REFUNDS WILL NOT BE ISSUED once your order is processed, for any reason. For full details, see our Terms and Conditions. To reschedule, contact Strategy7 at 707.538.8133.
I’m opening a restaurant/food business; when do I need to have a certified food protection manager?
The law provides 60 days to ensure that a food facility has a certified food protection manager employed when a new business is started, change of ownership, or if the certified food protection manager leaves the business. That can be you (the owner) or an employee.
Once I’m certified, is my certification good anywhere?
The California Food Handler Card is valid anywhere in California except in Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties which have their own local Food Handler California tests. It is recommended that you consult with the local enforcement agencies in these counties to find out more information on their local Food Safety California test requirements.
